Test Drive: The True Meaning and What to Look For

Each time someone walks into a dealership to look at a car, there is the distinct probability that the customer will ask to take a Test Drive.

From a car buying perspective, it is anticipated and welcomed, as it often
signifies true interest in the vehicle and provides great opportunity for a potential buyer to get to know and fall in love with the car. Doing this sacred time, the buyer is at one with the car, taking in the smells, the newness, the feel and the experience of it all. The salesman often is little more than the escort. Quiet and unassuming, the conversation often subsides, with various interjections of the wonderful perfections of the vehicle at hand.

A webster's definition of the word test ---An examination, experiment, or trial, as to prove the value or ascertain the nature of something; a set of questions, problems, or exercises for determining a person's knowledge, abilities, aptitude, or qualifications --- brings up some interesting questions about the true meaning of the most common aspect involved in the car buying experience.

If a test should in fact, ascertain the value of the car, then there should be some specific qualifications or requirements that the buyer should be looking for. In addition, if a test includes actually questioning and assessing potential problems to determine a person's knowledge, then there should be a set of questions and exercises in place to address with the salesman.


Some Things to Check for when Purchasing A Used Car*:

  • Seat belts - The functional use of the seat belt is an important factor to anyone purchasing a used vehicle. Seat belts are included for the personal safety and well being of the individual utilizing the car. If seat belts are not in proper working order it minimizes the safety of those that ride in the car. To check seat belts, simply pull them (both front and back) to ensure they provide proper give and then make sure they lock into place.
    · Windshield wipers - Most important on rainy days, these simple windshield accessories can prevent potentially dangerous situations when traveling. Windshield wipers should be in place and without worn wiper blades . In addition, turn them on to ensure they work.

  • Spare tire and jack - A spare tire and jack should be in place in the event of a flat tire.

  • Working radio and antenna - Check the radio to see that it works. In addition, make sure the car has an antenna.

  • Side view mirrors - Manual and electrical accessories should be tested to ensure they are functional.

  • Owners Manual - The owners manual provides critical information useful for the upkeep and maintenance of the car. These useful accessories are often misplaced after a car if a car has had several owners.

  • Air Conditioning/ heater - Check the AC and heater to ensure both summer and winter comfort.

Test driving a new car should be just as thorough as test driving a used car. There are some different variables involved, but the same "test" qualifications should remain in tack. Remember to do your research before buying ----new or used.
